Last night’s Emmy Awards show was very entertaining and theatrical, with lots of hi-tech production and Hollywood glamour. Not as many stand-out dresses for me this year, and my picks often don’t mirror the fashion reporters’ choices; I think the color and fit of an outfit should be flattering to the wearer, and a dress can be very sexy without also being an anatomy lesson. So here are my top picks for this year’s Emmys Fashion:
- #1 – Two-way tie for Best Dressed with Nicole Kidman and Viola Davis. These two ladies always seem to make my list!
- #2 – Gabrielle Union
- #3 – Evan Rachael Wood
- Honorable Mentions: Claire Foy, Susan Sarandon, Sofia Vergara, Cicely Tyson, Issa Rae, Susan Kelechi Watson, Leslie Jones, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Lena Waithe.
- Top Men’s looks – Anthony Anderson, Tituss Burgess, Chris Sullivan (love his top hat), LL Cool J and Donald Glover.
Nicole Kidman always looks completely fantastic. She wore a glamourous red tea-length dress with a full swingy skirt, deep cuts on the sides, and rhinestone detail on the bodice front and around the neckline. It was sexy but ladylike at the same time. It even looked elegant as she was sitting down, and she carries herself beautifully. Her makeup and hair were impeccable, with bright gold tones in her hair color and her signature red lip.
Viola Davis is another star who knows just how to put herself together to stunning advantage and look different every time. She rocked an hot orange full-length dress which was beautifully fitted and draped to her body. The long train and 1940s style neckline had a slightly retro look, but the bright color gave a fresh twist, and looked incredible against her skin. Her hair and makeup were also stellar – her hair was swept up on the sides with curls and texture on top, and her makeup colors were deep and strong but more subdued to allow the dress to take center stage.
Gabrielle Union was an award presenter with L.L. Cool J (who also looked fabulous). Gabrielle wore a stunning black lace gown with a see-thru skirt and a charming lace capelet edged at the neckline with a sparkly rhinestone trim and clasp. Her hair was styled in a wide fan ponytail that flowed out like the capelet when she walked. I liked the uniqueness of this outfit.
Evan Rachael Wood wore a white high cutaway tuxedo jacket with tails that was very feminine and flattering, partnered with matching fitted vest and wide leg trousers. Clair Foy also made an elegant statement in pants, but with a black fitted strapless jumpsuit detailed with sparkling trim across the top and a long shoulder train.
My honorable mentions were also impressive: Susan Sarandon in a deep navy off-the-shoulder gown and beautiful hair; Sofia Vergara looking like a princess in a fitted strapless gown with a fanned-out skirt at the very bottom; Cicely Tyson was every inch the ‘grande dame’ in a red gown with huge stand-up collar, split sleeves and long train; each of my remaining picks wore outfits that flattered their size, coloring and personal style.
The gentlemen also sported some refreshing formal wear: Anthony Anderson was very dapper in a snow white tuxedo jacket and black tie; Tituss Burgess in a bright gold jacket; Donald Glover in a full purple suit; and Chris Sullivan in his fun top hat and cane.
